Meet Frances McClelland, who is undertaking an internship with us in 2020.
Frances McClelland is an Honours student in Cultural Anthropology at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. She chose to take anthropology at Honours level because anthropology had turned the way she thought about the world on its head.
As the first in her family to attend University, and growing up in a lower socioeconomic community, Frances felt overwhelmed by the academic environment that she was thrown into at university and quickly realised how inaccessible university can be. However, she slowly found anthropology as a safe place to express and explore less traditional forms of knowledge. This developed her specific interests in Decolonising methodologies, feminist approaches to research, and the use of visual and public anthropology.
For her internship, Frances is investigating how ASAA/NZ could develop anthropology-related outreach materials aimed at secondary schools and the general public within Aotearoa New Zealand.
